Students and pupils from Suceava County took part in educational meetings dedicated to combating disinformation and understanding the role of the citizen in the post-truth era, organized within the project “Why Democracy Now? What It Means to Be a Citizen in the Era of Post-Truth and Disinformation.”
The events took place at the “Ștefan cel Mare” University of Suceava, involving students from the Faculty of History, Geography, and Social Sciences, as well as at the “Iorgu Vârnav Liteanu” Technological High School in Liteni and the “Oltea Doamna” Technological High School. The discussions were led by Marin Gherman and journalist and PhD candidate Oana Șlemco and focused on the mechanisms of disinformation, information manipulation, and propaganda in the contemporary digital space.
The project is implemented by the International Alliance of Romanian Journalists and the Veridica platform, with the support of the Ministry of Education, and is funded by the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The initiative aims to develop critical thinking among young people and to strengthen their ability to identify fake news and manipulative narratives.
Meetings and courses within the project are taking place in 21 counties across Romania. As part of the same project, Marin Gherman and Oana Șlemco also delivered the conference “Why Democracy Now? What It Means to Be a Citizen in the Era of Post-Truth and Disinformation” at the “Petre Andrei” University of Iași. The event also included the launch of a special issue of the political science journal Polis, dedicated to the theme “Donald Trump and Trumpism.”
